"A Study in Blue" was inspired by many of my favorite things that are the color blue: A blue-eyed cat, hydrangeas, morning glories, a blue jay, a butterfly. It is a Mixed Media piece, carved with woodcutting gouges from a piece of artist's linoleum that is mounted to a block of wood. I hand-painted the gouged out areas with pigmented India ink, and the raised areas of the linoleum with black acrylic paint. I carved the linoleum purposefully to add texture: swirls in the background, fur on the cat, veins on the leaves, and depth to the flower petals. My goal in creating this piece was to celebrate beauty through the use of color.
