Hydrangea Platter

Hydrangea Platter, Division I Professional
Hydrangea Platter
Hydrangea Platter is a work of kiln-formed art glass made in a total of 4 firings aimed at giving a strong sense of dimensional depth to the foliage. Chemical reactions between copper and lead based colors in the glass were used to create additional colors, whose depth and strength are controlled by the heat and length of firing. The bowl was cold-worked after the final firing to give the edges a smooth finish, inside and out with some deep green leaves falling over the edge. This work represents the trifecta of kiln-formed glass: artistry, chemistry and the familiarity with one's kiln's firing style. The adventure of kiln glass is not knowing the result until the kiln is cool enough to open and suddenly seeing workmanship and annealing calculations have paid off!
